Following John’s death in 1975, Velva sewed and pressed lingerie at Snowdon’s in Osceola, made electrical wiring harnesses at Murray Products and then worked for 16 years as an accounting clerk for Iowa Public Employees’ Retirement System in Des Moines until her retirement Sept. 30, 1993. Velva was baptized in the Murray Church of Christ on March 22, 1964. After moving to Des Moines, she attended the Rising Sun Church of Christ in Pleasant Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Francis; two sisters, Marie Beck and Maxine Woodard; and a brother, LaVonne Smith.
