MRS. DELBERT MULLINS OF EARLHAM SUCCUMBS

Dies at Dexter Hospital Friday as Result of Stroke

Mrs. Delbert Mullins of Earlham died last Friday at the Dexter hospital following a stroke. She was 74 years of age.

Mrs. Mullins had spent most of her life in Dallas and Madison counties, coming here in a covered wagon from the Pacific coast when she was two years old. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Smithson and was born in Eugene, Ore., on July 18, 1867.

She was married to Delbert Mullins on Oct. 7, 1888. They celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home in Earlham three years ago. They were the parents of 12 children, three of whom died in infancy.

She is survived by her husband; five daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Dalton, Mrs. Ethel Hester and Mrs. Garnet Switzer , all of Van Meter, Mabel Mullins of Lake View and Mrs. Hazel Reinert of Earlham; four sons, Dale and Gerald Mullins of Winterset, Earl Mullins of Adel and Russell Mullins of Detroit, Mich; a brother, Newton Smithson of Eva, Okla.; and three sisters, Mrs. Henry C. Van Meter of Vineland, N. J., Mrs. Belle Phillips of Long Beach, Cal., and Ida Smithson of Des Moines; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Methodist church in Earlham with burial at the Otterman cemetery northwest of Van Meter.

Mrs. Delbert Mullins Claimed by Death

Mrs. Delbert Mullins, 74, widely known woman in Madison and Dallas counties, died at the Dexter hospital Friday, November 7.

Mrs. Mullins death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage, which she had suffered three weeks previous.

Funeral services were held at the Earlham Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Cecil Latta was in charge of the services.

An account of her long and useful life is related in her obituary which follows.

Susie M. Smithson, daughter of Eugene W. and Sarah Ann Smithson, was born near Eugene, Oregon, July 18, 1867, and passed away at the Dexter hospital, November 7, 1941 at the age of 74 years, three months and 20 days. At the age of two years she came with her parents to Dallas county, Iowa, having made the trip in a covered wagon, and settled near Adel, where she grew to womanhood.

On October 7, 1888 at Adel, Iowa, she was united in marriage to Delbert Mullins, and the newly wedded couple established their home on a farm northwest of Adel. Since that time they have always made their home in Dallas and Madison counties. For the past five years they have resided in Earlham, and in 1938 celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary.

To this union were born twelve children, two daughters and one son dying in infancy.

The deceased is survived by her husband; five daughters, Myrtle Dalton, Ethel Hester and Garnet Switzer of Van Meter; Mabel of Lake View; and Hazel Reinert of Earlham; four sons, Dale W. and Gerald W. of Winterset; Earl E. of Adel, and Russell of Detroit, Michigan; nine grandchildren, Earl G. Dalton of New York City; Maxine Leeds of Hollywood, California; Lisle, Marvyl and Betty Sue Mullins of Winterset; Dorothy Switzer of Van Meter; Carroll Reinert of Earlham; and Mary Jane and Earl Mullins, Jr., of Adel; also three sisters, Miss Ida Smithson of Des Moines; Mrs. C. V. Phillips of Bellflower, California; and Mrs. H. C. Van Meter of Vineland, New Jersey; and one brother, L. N. Smithson of Eva, Oklahoma; besides other relatives and a host of friends.

Mrs. Mullins was a member of the Earlham Methodist church. She was a good wife and mother, beloved of all who knew her. Her chief interest in life was her home and family. She will be sadly missed by those at the Home Circle and all who come in the circle of her Friendship.
