Charles Sumner Mapes was born December 5, 1861, near Colesburg, Delaware county, Iowa and died December 3, 1928 at De Soto at the age of 67 years. In 1866 he came with his parents to Penn township, Madison county, and it was there that he spent the greater part of his life.
On December 15, 1888, he was married to Amanda Hutchison. To this union eleven children were born, nine of whom are living: Mrs. G. B. Long of De Soto; Howard of Fontanelle; Leo of Earlham; Hattie, who died in infancy; Sumner of Earlham; Clarence, Perry, Henry, Mrs. Mildred Stump and Lester of De Soto. These with eight grandchildren, one brother, Festus and sister, Laura of Earlham, and many friends and neighbors are left to mourn his loss, his wife having preceded him in death March 23, 1922.
In 1909 he moved with his family to De Soto where he has since resided. His funeral services were held December 5, 1928 from the M. E. church in De Soto, conducted by Rev. James Walls. Six of his sons acted as pall bearers. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Benfield with Mrs. C. E. Mark presiding at the piano, the interment taking place in the De Soto cemetery.
