MAYME HOCKETT

Mayme Hockett, 80, a former Earlham resident died January 7 at Boone where she had been a resident of the Eastern Star Home for several years. The daughter of Stephen and Ruth Hockett, Earlham pioneers, she graduated from the local high school and after her graduation from college taught music for a time at Earlham high school. She attended Penn College, Oskaloosa; and Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

For 40 years she taught music in the Des Moines public schools and continued to be active in musical organizations after her retirement in 1958. She was a member of the Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church in Des Moines, Mount Olivet White Shrine, Chapter 89 of the Eastern Star, and national, state and Des Moines education associations.

The last remaining member of her immediate family, Miss Hockett was a sister of the late Mrs. J. E. Walton, long-time Earlham resident. With her niece, Celia Walton Pippinger, she attended the Earlham centennial last summer and could recall many happenings of earlier times.

Funeral services for Miss Hockett were held at the Eastern Star Home with burial in the Boone cemetery.
