Mrs. Hayes Hamilton Dies

Mrs. Hayes H. Hamilton, who has been seriously ill, at her home two miles east of Pitzer, for the past two months, died, Friday afternoon, August 23d, about 4:30 o’clock. Mrs. Hamilton was the former Virgie Wynkoup, daughter of Simeon and Mary Wynkoup, and was born in Antioch, Ohio, August 12, 1876. She came to this county, with her parents, when she was a baby, and they lived in the Fairview neighborhood, in Madison township. Here she spent her girlhood, and was married in 1903, to Mr. Hamilton.

In 1906 the family moved to the farm in Jackson township, that has since been their home. Mrs. Hamilton has been in poor health for the past three years, and her condition has been critical the last two months.

The Rev. A. R. Weed, pastor of the West Star church, which she had attended for many years, conducted her funeral services, at the church, Sunday, August 25th, at two o’clock, and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. He was assisted by the Rev. Roy McNichol of Greenfield, an old friend of the family.

Mrs. Hamilton leaves her husband, and their two children, Clifton of Jackson township, and Mrs. Lois Taylor of Madison township, and four grandchildren. A daughter Mary, died at the age of five years. She also leaves her mother, three brothers, and six sisters, all of Earlham and vicinity: Mrs. Mary Wynkoup, Clyde, Gary and Z. A. Wynkoop, Mrs. Anna Cook, Mrs. Pearl Price, Mrs. Blanche Wright and the Misses Aileen, Louie and Grace Wynkoop.

Pallbearers at the funeral Sunday were Lloyd Wright, Fred Kuntz, Raymond Breakenridge, E. R. Tompkins, Loren Eyerly of Winterset, and Morris Applegate of Redfield. Honorary pallbearers were Mesdames Blanche Wight, Ethel Kuntz, Minnie Seybold and Myrtle Kuntz.

Mrs. Hamilton, daughter of Mrs. Mary J. Wynkoop of Earlham has lived in this community for twenty-seven years or the greater part of her married life.

She was a member of the West Star church and until her recent illness had been active in Christian work and the various activities of the neighborhood.

She was never so happy as when doing for others. The large concourse of sorrowing friends at her funeral testified to the esteem in which she was held in her community.

Surviving her are her husband, a son, Clifton Hamilton, a daughter, Mrs. Charles Taylor, four grandchildren. One daughter Mary Frances, and one grand daughter Helen Berniece having preceded her in death. She leaves besides her mother, three brothers, six sisters and a host of relatives and friends.
