Death of R. E. Coon

R. E. Coon, 82 year-old resident of Madison county farm, died there last Saturday.

Mr. Coon had been a resident of Madison county for many years. He worked in Winterset as a printer, also following that trade in Des Moines for some time.

He was the son of Manson and Rachael Coon and was born in the state of New York, on December 9, 1852. In 1878 he was married to Bertha (Alberta) Fannestock who died in 1914. They had no children.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. M. R. Talley of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

OLD TIME PRINTER DIES ON SATURDAY

Emory Coon Was Foreman Of The News Years Ago. Burial Sunday.

R. E. Coon, 82, printer and painter, over seventy years a resident the Winterset, died Saturday morning at ten o’clock after a long illness. He had been in feeble health for several years and was confined to his room for the past six months.

Emory Coon,”Em”, was a familiar figure in Winterset many years. He came to Winterset with his parents during or right after the Civil war. He learned the painting trade with his brother George, but discarded it for printing, serving an apprenticeship in the Winterset Sun office and afterward working as foreman of the Winterset News.

He worked at intervals for The News, painting for a year or two and then working in the composing room of The News and on other papers in Winterset.

He was married to Bertha Fahenstock who died in 1923. They had no children. The only relatives he has in Madison County are Bert and Mrs. Pearl Ladd, living south of Patterson.

Several relatives from Des Moines attended the funeral which was held at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2:30. The Rev. M. R. Talley of the Methodist church conducted the services. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
