Station Agent W. H. H. Lancaster, of Earlham Killed on the Quarry Switch.
On last Tuesday Mr. W. H. Lancaster, the C. R. L. & P. station agent at Earlham, was riding on a car of stone which was being hauled on the switch from the quarry south of town to the main line. With him were conductor Perigo and brakeman Ware and Hanley. Going over a bridge the car ahead of them became derailed and went over in the gully, knocking some of the timbers of the bridge out of place, and causing the cars of stone on which the men were riding to follow. It seems almost miraculous that any of them escaped alive. As it was, while the conductor and two brakemen were seriously cut and bruised, Mr. Lancaster had both legs crushed, besides being hurt about the head and body. He lingered until about nine o’clock at night, when he died. The other injured men will recover.
His violent death has caused deep grief, not only at his home, but throughout the county, as he was well known and universally respected. He had many acquaintances in Winterset, who speak of him in the highest terms as a man and a citizen. He was a prominent mason, and at the time of his death was master of St. Alban’s lodge at Earlham, an office which he had held for many years. He was a union veteran and a member of the G.A.R. At the time of his death he was about fifty years old. He leaves a wife and several children, who are objects of the sincere sympathy of all.
