September 18, 1918Death of JOHN CRIDLING
Last Thursday morning, Mr. and Mrs. John Cridling left home to spend a couple of days with their daughter, Mrs. Fred Clopton, of Lincoln township. They were driving along the Bluffs road near the McNamara farm, discussing matters, when he said "What's the matter?" Mrs Cridling looked at him and said: "Well, what is the matter?" noticing that his head was bent forward as if looking at something in the road or at the buggy wheel. Again she asked: "What is the matter?" Then she saw that something was wrong and called to John Marley who was passing by on a truck to help her. Assisted by Mr. McCauley, they carried Mr. Cridling to McCauley's yard, but he died before any aid could be given him. He had been as well as usual that morning, but his heart had been troubling him for some time. Mrs. Cridling, whose health has been very delicate, was greatly shock by the sudden death of her husband.
Mr. Cridling came to Scott township, Madison county in 1870 from Illinois, living there until his mother's death seven years later. For a time he lived in Pottawattamie county, then in Missouri, Nebraska and Dakota, living on farms in those states. In 1891, he came back to this county where he has since made his home.
About fifteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Cridling came to Winterset, where they have made a place for themselves in the esteem of neighbors and friends. Mrs. Cridling, the former Laura Evans, has three daughters to care for her: Mrs. Sal Darnall, Mrs. Fred Clopton and Mrs. Fred Wilkinson. Mr. Cridling was a man whom people liked, always the same, even tempered kind and thoughtful friend to all who knew him. General regret has been expressed because of his death in such an unexpected way. He will be sorely missed in Winterset.
Funeral services were held at the Cridling home Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. D. Mann.
The Masonic order carried out its irtualistic ceremonies at the grave burial taking place north of Winterset in the (Primitive) Baptist cemetery.
