DEATH OF NELSON SMITH

Long Time Resident of Madison County Dies at Jamaica

J. N., better known as “Nelson”, Smith passed away at Jamaica, Iowa, Sunday at 9 p. m., after a brief illness following a stroke of apoplexy. A brief service will be held Wednesday, November 27th at Jamaica and 10:30 a. m. and the body will be brought to St. Charles where funeral services will be held from the M. E. church at 2:30 p. m. Burial is to be in the St. Charles cemetery.

Mr. Smith was in every sense a pioneer resident of Madison county. He came from Ohio with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith in 1869, locating in Lincoln township, on the farm now occupied by E. E. Guilliams.

After his marriage to Flora Wilson, he located on a farm west of Winterset and afterward moved to St. Charles, where he and his brother-in-law, T. J. Killam were engaged in the lumber and coal business for 30 years.

Mrs. Smith and one son, Ray, are the remaining members of his family.

News of Interest from St. Charles

Funeral services were held for J. N. Smith Wednesday afternoon at three o’clock, conducted by his pastor from Jamaica. Mr. Smith passed away at his home in Jamaica on Sunday evening and funeral services were held there, Wednesday forenoon with another service here in the Methodist church were he labored so faithfully in the Sunday school and church for 32 years. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the St. Charles cemetery.

County Briefs – St. Charles

The funeral services of J. N. Smith were held in the Methodist Church following those of Mr. Black and burial was made in the St. Charles Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, in 1862 and moved with his parents, in 1869 to Lincoln township near the Beerbower school house.

He was married to Flora Wilson in 1884 and to this union one son, Ray, was born. After farming for ten years in Lincoln township, he moved with his family to St. Charles were he entered into the lumber business, remaining here until 1925 when he sold out. He was in the same business one year in Truro, two years in St. Mary’s, and seven years in Jamaica, where death came to him last Sunday, November 24.

While he lived in St. Charles, he was always active in Sunday school and church work. He was an asset to any community.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Flora Smith, one son, Ray, of Chicago and one granddaughter, Mary Flo Smith, who is now a student at the State University of Iowa.

Short funeral services were held at Jamaica Wednesday morning conducted by his pastor, and then that afternoon, services were held in the Methodist church in St. Charles where he had been an active member for over thirty years.
