Death of Mrs. Steve Murphy

Mrs. Steve Murphy, a former resident of Madison county, died at her home, 912-15th street in Des Moines, Wednesday, March 6th, at the age of 93 years. Mrs. Murphy was the former Miss Elizabeth Clark, and she came from New York to Lee township, in 1870. She made her home there, for many years and Mr. Murphy died about 19 years ago. In 1920 Mrs. Murphy moved to Des Moines, where she has since resided. She leaves four sons and a daughter: Dan Murphy of Cumming, and Tom of Des Moines, and John, Peter and Miss Mary, who made their home with their mother.

Requiem high mass was held for Mrs. Murphy at St. John’s Catholic church in Des Moines, Saturday, March 9, at 9 o’clock, and interment was made in St. Patrick’s cemetery, north of Bevington. Mrs. T. Walter Beam of Winterset, a cousin of Mrs. Murphy, spent Friday at the Murphy home, and the Misses Marcella and Kathryn Cunningham drove to Des Moines Saturday morning to attend her funeral services.

News of Interest from St. Charles

Mrs. Elizabeth Clark Murphy, aged 93 died at her home in Des Moines last Thursday and was buried in St. Patrick’s cemetery Irish settlement last Saturday beside her husband who died 19 years ago.

Mrs. Murphy came from Ireland to this country when but a young girl. After living for a time in New York she came to Des Moines and served as housekeeper to Rev. J. F. Brazzil, an uncle by marriage. She spent some time with her uncle, the late John Cunningham and from there was married to Stephen Murphy in the year 1872.

They were the parents of five children, all of whom are living. The children are John, Tom, Peter and Miss Mary of Des Moines and Daniel of Cumming.

For many years the family lived on a farm 3 miles north of Bevington having lived on a farm in Lee township until the children were grown and were among the pioneer families of the Irish Settlement.
