Death of George W. Smith

Mr. George W. Smith, for many years a resident of Jefferson township, died at his home last Monday night at 10:30 o’clock, after an illness of about three months. He had suffered for some time from stomach trouble, then lumbago and finally a combination of ailments of an internal character which after much suffering, resulted in his death.

Mr. Smith was born in Ohio in 1848, moved to Illinois in 1864 and was married to Miss Hattie Brown in 1875. To them were born two children, Sankey and Mrs. Lottie Smith, both of whom live nearby and were present during his sickness and death, assisting the wife and mother in doing all that human hands could do to alleviate the pain and suffering.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved onto their present farm in 1876, which has ever since been their home.

Geo. W. Smith was widely known by the people of this county as one of our best men. He enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him and was highly respected for his noble character, kind heart, and sterling integrity – George Smith’s word was as good as his bond and he never betrayed a trust.

He was one of the most prosperous farmers in his township. By industry and thrift he had amassed a comfortable fortune, built a beautiful modern home and established his children around him that he might enjoy them in his old age, which he was not permitted to do.

The funeral services were held in the Jefferson Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, at which his old pastor, Rev. Stiverson, officiated, and the remains were interred in the church cemetery.
