ROSE TIERNAN DIES IN CAR-TRAIN CRASH

Daughter of James Tiernan Victim of Accident In Des Moines

Miss Rose Tiernan, 26-year-old former Madison county girl, was instantly killed Sunday night in Des Moines when the car she was driving was struck by a Great Western passenger train on Fleur drive, just south of Sunset road. Martin McCarthy, the girl's uncle who was with her, also was killed.

Miss Tiernan was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Tiernan, well known Lee township residents, and was a niece of Mrs. Roger Morrissey of Winterset. She formerly taught school near here and about three years ago moved to Des Moines where she was employed at Winnick's store.

The fast Great Western train with which Miss Tiernan collided picked up her car and carried it 400 feet down the tracks before it could be stopped. The car was utterly demolished. The bodies of both victims were badly crushed and they were dead when taken from the wreckage.

In addition to her parents, immediate survivors of Miss Tiernan are four brothers, John, James, Giles and Francis Tiernan and a sister Kathryn Tiernan.

Funeral services were to be held this morning (Thursday) at St. Patrick's Catholic church in Lee township. The Rev. Father Judge was to be in charge. Burial will be made in the St. Patrick's cemetery.
