Charles Carl Tilp, son of John and Francis Tilp, was born on January 8, 1876 at Carlsport, Germany, and passed away at his home in Peru, Iowa, January 5, 1935 at the age of fifty-eight years, eleven months and twenty-eight days. Mr. Tilp suffered a stroke about a year ago from which he receivered. (recovered) A month ago he suffered another stroke and continually grew weaker until the end came and he peacefully slipped away.
Soon after the death of his father in Germany and at the age of two he came with his mother to America. They settled near Manchester, Iowa, where he was reared and received his education.
Mr. Tilp began as a boy to make his own way in the world. At eighteen he began work as a telegraph operator for the Chicago & Northwestern railroad at Manchester. Two years later he was transferred to Byron, Illinois. Shortly after he came to Peru as station agent for the Chicago and Great Western Railroad in which position he remained for twenty-eight years. He left this employ eleven years ago and began the operation of a general store in Peru and continued in this business until his death.
Charles C. Tilp and Miss Della Alene Lorenzen were united in marriage near Peru on November 23, 1902. To this union was born one son Paul, who now resides in Peru and was associated with his father in the store.
With the railroad and in the store across the street, Mr. Tilp made a wide circle of acquaintances, who became friends because they found in him a friend. He was a man of highest integrity and uprightness. He was a Free Mason, being a member of Hazel Lodge No. 573, Peru, Iowa.
This good man leaves to mourn his loss: his wife, his son Paul; a brother Joseph Tilp of Dubuque, Iowa; a grandson, Paul Tilp, Jr.; three nieces; five nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
The funeral was held Monday from the Methodist church in Peru, and interment made in the Peru cemetery.
