Page 1SANKEY SMITH DIES AFTER SHORT ILLNESS
Winterset and Madison county residents were shocked to hear, last Friday of the death of Sankey J. Smith, well known Jefferson township farmer. Mr. Smith who was 57 years of age, had not been well for the past year but had continued with his work, and had only been bedfast, for six days. Leakage of the heart caused his death, about four o’clock, Friday morning, March 22nd.
The deceased was born in Jefferson township, August 28, 1878, and always made his home in that township. His home for the past 35 years has been but a short distance from his birthplace.
On March 19, 1902 he was married to Miss Ethel Betts, who died in May 1915. They were the parents of three children who survive them: Virgil, Russell and Helen, all at home. He also leaves a sister who resides in the west.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Jefferson United Brethren church, and the Rev. E. A. Elliot of Des Moines conducted his service, at that church, Sunday afternoon, March 24th. Four of his nephews and two close friends served as pallbearers: Harry Smith of Winterset, Ryman Smith of Ames, Earl Norman of Booneville, Clarence Norman of Des Moines, Harry Reiman of Booneville and Alvin Alexander of Winterset. Burial was in the church cemetery.
