DEATH OF JAMES S. SMITH

James Sidney Smith, veteran Madison county farmer, died at his home in Jefferson township on May 24. He was 77 years old.

He had been in poor health, but was able to do some of the farm work. He was in the barn when he was stricken.

James Smith was the son of Jackson and Mary Smith, and was born April 21, 1858, in Coshocton county, Ohio. He came with his parents to Madison county in 1864, and the remainder of his life, with the exception of four years spent in Winterset, has lived in Jefferson township.

On October 15, 1885, he married May F. Howell, daughter of Nelson and Margaret Howell of Crawford township. They were the parents of three children. He united with the church at the age of 15 years, and remained an active worker throughout his life.

The deceased leaves his widow; the three children, Harry H. Smith of Winterset, Ryman J. Smith of Ames, and Nellie M. Smith of Des Moines; and four grandchildren, Esther, Phyllis and Francis Smith of Ames and Harold Smith of Winterset.

Funeral services were held at the Jefferson U. B. church at 2 p. m. on May 27. The Rev. S. C. Peterson was in charge, assisted by the Rev. L. B. Foster. Burial was made in the family lot in the Jefferson cemetery.
