Death of Nellie Hills

Miss Nellie Hills, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hills of this place, died Monday in a hospital in Denver after a long illness with tuberculosis. She was twenty-three years of age. Miss Hills had been in this hospital for six weeks, but her condition gradually became worse. The body was brought back to Winterset and funeral services are being conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton at the home in the southeast part of town at 2:30 o'clock today (Thursday).

Miss Hills has always lived in this community. She attended local schools. She became ill several years ago and though she had had the best of medical care and attention, she did not improve. She was in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for over a year, but came home last summer for a visit with her parents. Six weeks ago she went to Denver. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Hills, two sisters, Miss Perle of Denver and Mrs. Verda Rippey of California and one brother, Robert of Des Moines.

Nelle Ruth Hills, the youngest daughter of L. H. and Cora Hills, was born in Winterset, April 8th, 1903. She was taken into the M.E. church on Easter Sunday, 1918 and was always a good and willing worker in the church, Sunday School, and the Standard Bearers’ Society.

She graduated from the Winterset high school with the class of 1923. Two years ago in November she realized her health was failing and on May 1st, 1924, she entered the hospital at Oakdale. After being there three months there was no improvement, so she decided to go to Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was there ten months, in the hospital most of the time. She had a longing to see the home folks and on July 1st of this year she came home.

She was always cheerful and enjoyed her home, and her friends as they visited her. Never complaining and always trusting in the Lord as her Savior, and often in her talk with friends she would tell them what prayer meant to her.

On October 1st so intent to regain her health she went to Denver, Colorado, and entered a hospital there, from which place she passed away November 15th, 1926, at the age of 23 years, 7 months and 7 days.

She leaves a loving father and mother; one brother, Robert C. Hills and wife, of Des Moines; Pearl V. Hills of Denver, Colorado; Verda V. Rippey and husband of Glendale, California; an aged grandfather; and other relatives and a host of friends.

Nelle will be missed from the home church, and from the community where she has always lived and grew to womanhood. Her stay on earth was of short duration, but or loss is heaven’s gain.

Funeral services were conducted from the home on Thursday, November 18th, by her pastor, Rev. D. J. Shenton, and she was laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
