End Comes Tuesday to Mr. Anderson Barnett, Whose 75 Years Were Nearly All Spent in Madison Co. Community Pays Tribute to Well Esteemed Citizen.
Mr. Anderson Barnett came to the end of life’s journey at about five o’clock Tuesday afternoon after a useful life of 75 years duration. His was the busy, hard life of the farmer, from which he retired several years ago to spend his declining years in a home in Earlham. It was his misfortune to be afflicted in these easier years with increased suffering, but he bore the burden bravely and made his cheerful presence felt in this community. Later he had to abandon even these limited walks in life, resigning himself to complete invalidism. His faith and courage were proof even against this test, and he came to the end endowed with the same optimism which was the moving spirit of his entire life and by which his friends best remember him.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon, Sept. 22 by Rev. Beers, and interment was in Earlham Cemetery. The church was nearly filled by the gathering of friends and old neighbors who came to pay the parting tribute of love and reverence. The following obituary was read:
Anderson Barnett, son of Albert and Jane Barnett, was born in Indiana, Aug. 23, 1852. When a small child he came with his parents to Iowa, and the greater part of his life was spent in the Fairview neighborhood.
On Jan. 6, 1876, he was united in marriage to Eva Barnett, who with their one child Charles, one grandchild Eilene, the daughter-in-law Anna, one brother W. J. Barnett, of Gardena, Cal., and a host of other relatives and friends are left to mourn his departure.
He passed away at his home in Earlham, Sept. 20 after a lingering illness, being confined to his bed for two and a half years, but he bore it all with a patience most remarkable always kind, never complaining, though longing for release and expressing his desire to go and be at home with Him.
He was converted and joined the Fairview Methodist Church in 1877, later transferring his letter to Earlham. He was a man of strong convictions for right, one that needed to be known to be appreciated. He had a wide circle of friends and was always ready and willing to lend the helping hand. His devotion to his little family was remarkable, their welfare was always uppermost in his thought.
When but a child his own mother passed away and the one who for so many years filled her place in the home always found in brother Barnett a thoughtful devoted son.
A good man has gone to his reward. The home, the church, the community are the poorer for his passing, but “the memory of the just is blessed.”
Relatives present from a distance at the funeral of Mr. Anderson Barnett today were Woody Barnett of Linden, Mr. and Mrs. John Wright, of Winterset, and the Ray Eyerly family, of Macksburg.
