Death of Philip J. Rowe

People of this community were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Philip J. Rowe, Saturday afternoon, November 13th at 2 o'clock. Mr. Rowe has been in poor health for some time with dropsy, but he took ill with pneumonia Tuesday evening. He was not considered critically ill until Friday evening when he became worse. He was seventy-three years of age at the time of his death.

Mr. Rowe was born in Dayton, Ohio and came to Madison county when a young man eighteen years of age. He lived on a farm in the Peru neighborhood for about twenty years, coming to Winterset thirty-five years ago. He was a street commissioner here for many years and made many friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. D. J. Shenton. The members of the Masonic lodge of which he was a member had charge of part of the exercises. He was buried in the Winterset cemetery.

Mr. Rowe is survived by his wife and seven children, Joe, Jessie, and Rebecca at home; Thomas near Winterset; R. B. at Indianola; Mrs. Effie Janney of Des Moines and Mrs. Roy Baird of Rockford, Illinois.

Philip J. Rowe, the son of Philip and Sophia Rowe was born in Dayton, Ohio, May 28th, 1853 and passed away at his home in Winterset on November 13th, 1926.

He was united in marriage to Martha J. Walker, October 22nd, 1876. Eight children came to gladden this home. They are all living but one, a daughter, Minnie, who died May 12th, 1887. The children are as follows: Joe, Jessie and Rebecca at home, Thomas P., near Winterset; H. R. at Indianola; Mrs. Effie Janney at Des Moines; and Mrs. Roy Baird at Rockford, Illinois; also four grandchildren, Mary Jane Rowe, Marjorie G. Baird, Lowell Janney, and Mrs. Don Baylor. Two great grandchildren, Billie Rowe Baylor, and Peter Baylor are left. One brother and one sister are living at Burlington, Iowa.

Mr. Rowe lived in Madison county 55 years and in Winterset 37 years. He was a charter member of the A.F. and A.M. lodge at Truro, and was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Winterset. He was an upright citizen, a good husband, an affectionate father, and fulfilled the offices given him in trust by the community with skill and fidelity. Many are ready to testify to his solid integrity and true worth as a good man.
