Will Benton Wiley

Will Benton Wiley, second son of George E. and Ann Drake Wiley, was born August 12, 1858, in Mitchell county, Iowa. He received his education in the Mitchell county schools and grew manhood in and near the place of his birth.

At the age of 23 he, with several associates went to Carthage, South Kakota (sic), where they filed on free claims and were among the first to settle in the new country. The next year his parents followed with their children and their families and Carthage has been the family home since that time.

December 29, 1890, he was united in marriage to Dora D. Rex, of Lake City, Iowa, and to their union were born six children, Ralph, Clarence, Hattie May, Glenn and Mrs. Ruth Kingery, all of this place, one son having died in infancy.

In 1894 he moved with his family to Lake City, Iowa, and three years later to Madison county, which has since been his home.

Though always a believer in The Christ and His followers in his daily life, not until recently did he make his public confession and unite with the church.

He had been in failing health for several years and though a constant sufferer was ever patient and cheerful until death which occurred Saturday evening September 24, 1927, at the age of 69 years, 1 month, and 12 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, five children, eight grandchildren, two brothers, Charles E., of Carthage, South Dakota and Dr. Fred A., of Pine City Minnesota, and numerous other relatives.

Will was a friend of everybody and counted everyone his friend. He was also a friend of all outdoors and was most happy when he could stroll through the woods surrounded by the flowers, the birds, and the growing things of nature.

Funeral services were conducted at the home by the Rev. F. Clare McCallon Monday afternoon at 2:30 p. m. and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
