Obituary Notice.

Samuel W. Spencer, of this city, was born September 5, 1827 in Cambria county, Pa., and died at his late home Friday morning, Oct. 4, 1889 at 12:05 a.m.

Mr. Spencer's early life was spent in Pennsylvania. September 5, 1850 he was united with his now bereaved wife, Miss Sarah J. Hilberry. November 24, 1852 they moved to Henry county, Ill. April 23, 1858 they moved to Sibley county, Minn. Here he partially improved a new farm but in Oct. 1863, under the panic of an Indian raid they abandoned the farm and everything they had and returned to Illinois. March 4, 1869 they came to Iowa and in April 1877 they moved to Winterset where they have made their home ever since.

Father Spencer was converted on the last day of the year 1850 and has been a true and devoted Methodist christian ever since. He was a man of unobtrusive ways and cheerful spirit. Years ago he was lead into a joyful experience of heart purity and was one of the most consistant of those we have known, both in the manner he made his confession of the experience and in the conformity of his daily life to his profession. No one has heard him speak a word of murmuring or repining.

He had been in feeble health for many years, and had not been able to do anything but keep himself sweet and religious. The last time he attended public service was in connection with the last Quarterly meeting. He was enabled to do so as he claimed in answer to prayer, and it was made a means of great comfort to him.

Father Spencer was peaceful and victorious in his last hours. The funeral took place from the Methodist church Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The services were conducted by his pastor, J. R. Horswell.
