Page 5Death of J. P. Frey
The death of J. P. Frey was noted in our column last week but the information we had was very meager. J. P. Frey was born in Bavaria, a German province, a little over 77 years ago, and had been a resident of the United States for about fifty years. He lived in Madison county eight years and was well know to most of our citizens. He had been residing in Peoria, Ill., where he had a son, Peter Frey, for about ten years. The deceased left a widow and eight children, among whom are Chas. and Ed Frey, of Monroe township. The Peoria papers gave account of the accident and resulting death as follows.
“Thursday evening, December 7th the old gentleman was knocked down at the corner of Washington and Elm Street by a horse driven by Wm. Slagly, formerly alderman of the seventh ward and later oil inspector. The accident occurred about 5 o’clock, just as it had got dark. Dr. Roberts happened to be passing and immediately attended the aged sufferer. He found at once that two or more ribs had been broken away from the breast bone, and that he had received a fearful blow on the chest. The patient was removed to the home of his son, where he lingered in agony until 1:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon, when the end came.”
The two boys in Madison county were summoned by wire and left Sunday evening, reaching Peoria in time for the funeral, which was held at 2 p. m. Monday, and the remains interred in the Peoria cemetery.
