A lingering illness ended the life of John Ignitius Shafer of near Churchville on December 7. Except for a year of residence near Patterson, he had spent his entire life in the Shafer home one mile south of Churchville. He was 59 years old.
On February 8, 1898, he married Katherine Powers. They were the parents of six children, one daughter, Mary, dying in infancy. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gladys Wiedman of Churchville, Mrs. Mabel Ziegler of Des Moines, Mrs. Kathryn Parkins of Patterson, and Pauline Shafer at home; one son, John Shafer, at home; a brother, William Shafer of Omaha, Nebraska, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted December 10 in the chapel of Churchville by the Rev. W. Hahesay, pastor of St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Winterset, assisted by the Rev. P. J. Casey of Churchville. Pallbearers were Edward Deheck, Otis Speer, Allen Cherry, Frank Seither, Percy Churchman and Henry Grassman. Burial was in the Calvary cemetery at Churchville.
