BENJAMIN KIRK, STORY CITY

Benjamin Kirk, 75, longtime Madison County farmer and Winterset resident and most recently of Story City, died Oct. 22, 2007, at Israel Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 29, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.

Ben Kirk was born March 30, 1932, in Clarke County to John and Wilma (McChesney) Kirk and received his education in the area of his birth. His marriage to Virginia Ragan took place Aug. 11, 1951, in Winterset. They farmed in Union County before Ben left for the service. During the Korean War, Ben served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. On March 1, 1955, they moved to the family farm in Madison County where they spent the next 50 years. Ben and Virginia then resided in Osceola for a short time and, most recently, in Story City. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star in Lorimor, the National Farmers Organization and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Max.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Story City; three sons, Craig Kirk of Story City, Mike Kirk of Marshalltown and Doug Kirk of Murray; three brothers, Raymond Kirk of Chariton and Larry Kirk and Ronnie Kirk, both of Lorimor; three sisters, Helen Powers of Winterset, Patricia Grandfield of Lorimor and Barbara Waller of Oskaloosa; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
