Gaylord Guye Gillespie was born in Madison county, Iowa, Jan. 5, 1897 and died Oct. 14, 1918 of pneumonia at the base hospital at Camp Dodge, being 21 years, 9 months and 9 days old. He attended school in Winterset, graduating with the class of 1917. He held membership in the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church and lived a good Christian life.
When Gaylord was two and one half years old, his father died. Mourning his loss are his mother, two sisters; Mrs. Lurana Clark of Winterset, Miss Geraldine of Dexter and two brothers, Cecil of Dexter and Raymond of Camp Pike, besides many friends and relatives. Gaylord was called to the colors, Sept. 5, 1918, going to Camp Dodge, where he remained until his death. He became a member of the Winterset band and tried out for the Camp Dodge band, passing successfully, but was transferred to the hospital corps before he received the card notifying him that he had passed and was ready to leave for Ft. Snelling to enter the officers training school.
Funeral services were held here Thursday at the Gillespie home. Burial taking place at the Winterset Cemetery.
The Winterset band met at the cemetery and played in honor of its deceased member.

One of the saddest event in the community occurred when Gaylord Gillespie, who was stationed at Camp Dodge, died a week ago Sunday night of pneumonia following influenza. The remains were brought home on Tuesday evening and interred in the Winterset cemetery Thursday.
No services were held at the home owing to the serious illness of the brother, Cecil, and sister, Geraldine, who had contracted the disease when with their brother on Sunday.
he best of medical aid could not save Cecil and he was called to his maker Thursday evening at 10:30. Burial was held Monday at the Winterset cemetery. The family has the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement.
Corporal Raymond Gillespie, Camp Pike, came Monday to attend the funeral of his brother Cecil.

Gaylord Gillespie passed away at Camp Dodge with influenza or pneumonia resulting from it. His body arrived in Winterset Tuesday evening. Short funeral services were held at the Gillespie home Thursday. The deepest sympathy goes out from the entire neighborhood.
