James Edward Laughlin

James Edward Laughlin, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. F. Laughlin was born Jan. 26, 1889 and departed this life Oct. 8, 1918 as a result of pneumonia at the age of 29 years.

On June 1, 1918, he enlisted in the navy and was engineer on the training ship at Seattle, Wash., at the time of his death. The news of his sudden death cast a shadow of gloom over a wide circle of relatives and friends in Madison county, where he was born and raised to manhood, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Besides his parents he leaves to mourn his early death, two brothers, Peter and Joseph, both in France; and a sister, Mary, at home. The body was brought here for burial, the funeral being held at St. Joseph's church, Winterset, on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Rev. Father White celebrated the requiem high mass and delivered an eloquent patriotic sermon. The pall bearers were: John Laughlin, Robert Laughlin, Frank McNamara, Joseph Dorgan, Robert Neal, George Barber, Frank Libby and Hugh Rogers. Interment was at St. Patrick's cemetery in Lee township. May his soul rest in peace.
