James Theodore Creger, son of Samuel M. and Rebecca Reed Creger, was born near Truro, Aug. 11, 1858. He passed away at the family home, Sunday morning Feb. 5, 1922 at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 24 days.
He was united in marriage to Mary A. Swearingen, Oct. 16, 1879. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Euphemia J. Robinson, Mrs. Mona D. Kale and Mrs. Honor A. Reed, all of Truro.
At the age of 17 years, in the very strength of his young manhood, he gave his heart to God and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. This was the crowning act of his life and the good record of his life’s work, well done which he has left as a blessed heritage, to the family and friends in the fruitage of that act, when he chose God as a life partner. He was loyal to the church and to his God. A spirit of brotherly kindness characterized his actions. His advice was always good, and he was truly a friend to man. For ten years he was a trustee of the church, and at the time of his death was the church treasurer.
All his life has been spent in Madison county, except two years he and his wife lived in Kansas. In 1884, they located on their farm east of Truro. Here they lived and reared their family until six years ago, when they came to Truro to make their home. Five years ago Mr. Creger’s health began to fail, and at that time he was a great sufferer, but he was always patient and uncomplaining, thinking of others, rather than himself.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, three daughters, one brother, W. O. Creger; a sister, Mrs. Bradie Woolery and other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church in Truro, Feb. 7th, by his pastor, Rev. J. O. Carder, and the body was laid to rest in the cemetery east of Truro.
