Chet was born June 23, 1916, on the family farm in Webster Township, the son of Carl and Esther (Huffman) Haymond. Chet was a graduate of Macksburg High School. His marriage to Mary Ruth Brewer took place on Dec. 28, 1943, in Coffeyville, Kan. He served in the United States Air Force for four years and was a veteran of World War II.
Chet was a farmer all his life, operating on the family’s century farm. He was a member of the American Legion, Odd Fellows and the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church of rural Winterset. He also was a charter member of the Madison County Livestock and Fair Association and a member of the American, Iowa and Madison County Shorthorn Association. Chet’s passion was baseball. He was a catcher for the Macksburg and Winterset teams, as well as many other teams throughout his life. He also cherished the time spent with his children and grandchildren — especially watching them play ball, show cattle and wrestle.
Chet is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Ruth Haymond of Winterset; two daughters, Mary Frances (John) King of Creston and Dixie Lee (Mike) Erdman of Winterset; a brother, Rex Haymond of Winterset; four grandchildren, Kevin (Carol) King, Kim (Margie) King, Matt (Pam) Erdman and Jess Erdman; and five great-grandchildren.
