FRANCIS MARION PHARES

Francis Marion Phares died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. F. E. Walters in Douglas township, Saturday, August 30, 1919.

He was born in Ohio, January 28, 1836, son of Samuel C. Phares and Sarah (Marshall) Phares, one of a family of thirteen children of whom one brother, Samuel C. Jr. of Montana, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mattix of Lane, Ill., and Mrs. Eddie Harrison of Oregon, now survive him.

In early childhood he removed with his parents to De Witt county, Illinois where he spent his life with the exception of the past five years, which he spent in the home of his daughter. Five years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never entirely recovered, and has been an invalid since.

He was married in June 1861 to Elizabeth B. McPherson, who preceded him in death nineteen years ago. To this union were born six children, of whom three survive, William M. Phares of Muskogee, Okla., Mrs. Ina Brown of Illinois; and Mrs. T. E. Walters of Winterset.

He was a Civil War veteran, having served three years in Co. C. 41st Illinois Volunteers. He was wounded in the battle of Ft. Donaldson. losing the sight of one eye as a result. He participated in a number of battles and was in the Siege of Vicksburg.

The remains were taken to Clinton, Illinois for burial.
