Pneumonia Fatal to J. M. ROBBINS

Civil War Veteran, Pioneer, Dies at Advanced Age of 91

J. M. Robbins, Madison county pioneer and one of the three remaining members of Pitzer post, G.A.R., died at his home in Winterset Wednesday after a fatal illness of a few days. Death was caused by pneumonia, contracted Friday of last week. He was 91 years of age.

James Madison Robbins was born at Cana, Jennings county, Indiana, on December 3, 1843. He was the son of Caleb and Jane Lewis Robbins. During the Civil war he enlisted in Company K, 120th Indiana Volunteer infantry, and was honorably discharged from the service on May 31, 1865. At the time of his death he was commander of the Pitzer post in Winterset.

Mr. Robbins was married to Thankful Alma James on September 12, 1867. They settled in Kansas, making the trip by covered wagon. In October of 1874 they came to Iowa and settled in Madison county, and have resided here since that time. During his active life, Mr. Robbins followed the occupation of farming and stock raising.

In 1887 he united with the United Brethren church at Buffalo, south of Winterset.

Mr. Robbins is survived by his widow; three sons, Caleb A. Robbins of Winterset, Clyde E. Robbins of Butler, Missouri, and Fred O. Robbins of Spokane, Washington; three daughters, Mrs. Daisy Briggs of Winterset, Mrs. Grace Wight Gemmill of Laurel, Montana, and Mrs. Alma White of Davenport; besides 20 surviving grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. All of the children except the son in Washington and the daughter in Montana are present.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in Winterset at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Friday), under the direction of the Rev. W. C. Porter of Waterloo, former pastor here. Burial will be in the Winterset cemetery.
