Herbert Alexander Durand was born March 13, 1865, in Warren county, Iowa, the youngest child of Bonaparte and Louisa Durand, and died at the home of his daughter in Harlan, November 11, 1934. Age 69 years, 7 months and 28 days.
His father died before he was born and his boyhood was spent with Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Garrow near Norwalk. After finishing grade school, he attended college in Sedalia, Missouri, staying with his mother and brothers, Charles and Everett, all deceased.
After finishing college he returned to Warren county and on February 22, 1887, was united in marriage to Isabella Pilmer, and moved to a farm near Bagley, Guthrie county. The children born to this union were: daughters, Florence and Jeanette, and sons, George P. and Everett G. The mother and daughter, Jeanette, have preceded him in death. Later he moved to Des Moines on account of having injured his health by overwork and engaged in various enterprises until 1918 when he moved to his farm near St. Charles, which has been his home since that time.
He was elected county supervisor of Madison county in 1930 and took office January 1, 1932, and resigned on account of ill health, May 22, 1934. Since February, 1934, he was attended by his daughter, Florence, at her home in Harlan, who did everything she could to restore him to health. The immediate cause of his death was Bright’s disease and hardening of the arteries. His mind and memory were clear to the end.
He has been active in Masonic circles for many years. Having conducted schools of instruction and lectures in various parts of the state, he acquired a wide acquaintance among men and Masons. He was a member of Model Loge No. 315 A. F. & A. M., St. Charles, Lebanon Chapter No. 11 R. A. M. Winterset, Temple Commandery No. 4 Des Moines, and Model Chapter O. E. S. No. 174 St. Charles. Houck of Decatur, Illinois; one daughter, Mrs. Florence Infelt of Harlan; two sons, George P. of Prole and Everett G. of St. Charles; nine grandchildren and many friends.
