Winterset, Iowa
Wednesday, March 15, 1922CHARLES M. IAMS
Charles Melvin Iams was born May 30, 1868, in Lee township, Madison county, Iowa and died Feb. 18, 1922 at his home in Des Moines being 53 years and 9 months of age.
The deceased spent his boyhood days in Winterset and later returned to the same place after many years of service in the U. S. army. He was a Spanish-American war veteran. He enlisted at the age of 24 years, was wounded at the battle of San Juan hill and later honorably discharged. He re-enlisted, and was sent with his regiment to the Chinese boxer uprising and afterwards transferred to the Philippine Islands during the insurrection and was made one of Gov. W. H. Taft's body-guards. He retired from army life Sept. 1, 1905.
On July 7, 1905, Mr. Iams was united in the bonds of matrimony to Ida Mae Pomeroy, who survives him. We are glad to say that Mr. Iams was a Christian man. He united with the Winterset church, where his membership is until now. Early in his manhood, he had appetite for the calling of the ministry, and went to the LeGrand Bible school, to prepare his mind for this work.
He is survived by one brother, who was present at the funeral, which was held in Des Moines.
Note: Burial in the Glendale Cemetery at Des Moines.
