Frances Kiernan Doty, 94, of San Diego, Calif., died of congestive heart failure Dec. 1, 1996. Funeral services will be today, Wed., Dec. 4 in the chapel at Nazareth House in San Diego, Calif. A rosary will be recited at Caldwell-Raddatz Hickman Road Chapel in Des Moines on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church Irish Settlement on Dec. 7 at 10 a.m. with Frances Doty's nephew, the Rev. James Kiernan officiating the services. Burial will be at the St. Patrick's cemetery.

She was born in Madison County on April 14, 1902 to James and Elizabeth (Ryan) Kiernan. She was raised on the Kiernan farm in Jefferson township, receiving her early education in the rural schools there. She graduated from Catholic boarding high school in Carroll and then entered Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Des Moines where she graduated in 1929. She married Clarence Doty on Oct. 31, 1935 in the St. Augustin's chapel in Des Moines. The couple was in the furniture business.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four sisters; and four brothers.

Surviving relatives include one sister-in-law, Mrs. Tom (Mary) Kiernan of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two nieces; and 12 nephews, including Gary Kiernan of Madison County.
