FUNERAL SERVICES FOR A. D. BYRNE
Al Byrne, long-time Earlham business man, died at his home early Thursday morning, March 30.
While he had not been so well the past year, his death Thursday came as a shock to his many friends.
In September 1926 he bought the Bill Pearson produce business here and in 1926 sold the business to L. O. Patten. At this time he joined Bricker and Lewis, in their general merchandising business.
In 1941 he and his wife bought the Carl Bricker grocery store, which was then located in a room which is now the north half of the Branam Hardware.
After Bob and Cecile Lewis closed out their Briardale store, Al and Mary Byrne moved their store to that location in 1945, where they remained until they retired December 31, 1966.
Al had been a member of the Earlham fire department for many years and served as chief for several years. He was also a member of the Earlham business men’s association.
His obituary follows:
Alphonsus Dennis, youngest of six children of Edward and Mary Kavanaugh Byrne, was born in Knox County, Missouri April 21, 1898 and died at his home in Earlham March 30, 1967.
On June 15, 1925 he was married to Mary Bricker of Earlham.
To this union two sons were born: Dr. George Dennis Byrne who teaches in the mathematics department of the University of Pittsburgh, and Terrence Edward who works for the U.S. Government in Washington, D. C.
His widow, Mary Byrne, who survives him, as well as both sons and their wives, Laura and Sara, and five grandchildren: Elizabeth, Margaret, Stephen Alphonsus and Dennis, George’s children; and Patrick, son of Terence.
Al and his wife had been in the grocery business for many years, retiring in December of 1966.
He was a member of Stuart All Saints Parish for over forty years and a member of The Knights of Columbus for several years.
Survivors also include one sister, Frances Grace, of Phoenix, Arizona, and two nieces.
He was a good husband, a loving father and grandfather and loyal friend.
Funeral services were held in All Saints church in Stuart Monday morning, April 3, with burial in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Baring, Missouri on April 4.
He was a quiet person who will be greatly missed but his good life can serve as a model for all who knew and loved him.
