August 8, 1878 - page 2Killed by Lightning
The storm Wednesday evening of last week chose for one of its victims Mr. Warren D. Cooper, brother of our postmaster, who was struck by lightning and instantly killed. Mr. Cooper, with Mr. John Searles, and Joseph Alexander were stacking hay - Mr. Cooper on the stack - when he was struck instantly killing him and his team which stood by the stack. Mr. Searles was also badly shocked, and had it not been for Mr. Alexander, both would have been consumed by the flames of the burning stack. Mr. C. was an unmarried man of about forty years of age, well beloved by his family and highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral occurred on Friday, which was attended by a number of warm and sympathizing friends. Mr. Cooper was a man of upright character and noble impulses, having the reputation of always being honest, gentlemanly and trustworthy. His loss is keenly felt by the family and community at large.
