MARY ODELL OGBURN

Mary W. Odell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sol Odell, was born in Winterset, Iowa, Oct 1, 1854, and died at her home in South township, Madison county, Feb. 18, 1922, aged 56 years, 4 months and 17 days.

She moved with her parents to Scott township and lived there until she was united in marriage to Merritt Ogburn, Oct. 29, 1882. To this union 13 children were born, nine sons and four daughters. They are as follows: Mrs. Maud Beall of Alfalfa, Okla.; Mrs. Mabel A Boucher of Pleasantville, Iowa; Martin Ogburn, who is now on his way to England; Melvin Ogburn, who is with the U.S. army at Camp Berning, Ga.; Marion Ogburn of St. Charles; Matthew Ogburn, died in infancy; Merit William Ogburn of Des Moines; Milton Arthur Ogburn at Camp Lewis, Wash.; McKinley Cecil Ogburn, of Patterson; Mervil Eli Ogburn of Cherokee; Myrtle E., Milliard E. and Minnie A. are still at home.

Besides the children, she leaves 15 grandchildren and two sisters: Mrs. James W. Breeding of Winterset and Mrs. Worth Sayre of Minnesota.

Mrs. Ogburn united with the Methodist church at St. Charles in 1910, under the pastorate of Rev. A. E. George and when health, weather and conditions permitted, was a regular attendant at Sunday school and church with her three younger children. She was of a quiet disposition, a kind, loving mother, and wil be greatly missed by those she leaves at home.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Thursday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E. L. Field and interment made in the St. Charles cemetery.

St. Charles

Mrs. Merritt Ogburn died at her home southwest of town last Saturday night. She had been in her usual health except for a bad cold, and her death was very sudden. The last few years she has not been very strong. She was taken very sick Saturday night and before a physician could be secured, she had passed away.

The funeral services will not be held until some of the children arrive as some of them live some distance from here. She was the mother of 13 children, of whom 12 are living. A very strange coincidence is that the father who is still living and all of the children’s names begin with the letter M.

Coordinator's note: Transcribed as published, her year of birth on her gravestone is 1865 which is apparently correct as opposed to the "1854" that was published.
