Death of Alexander McMichael.

Again we are compelled to chronicle the sad announcement of the death of one of our most respected citizens that of Alexander McMichael, County Recorder, which occurred on Sunday morning July 6th.

Mr. McMichael’s disease was of a dropsical character and his malady had no doubt been preying upon him for a long time previous to his confinement to his home, although he was unconscious of the stealthy approach of his dangerous visitant.

Although his residence in Winterset has been but a brief six months, yet he had made many friends during that time, and was establishing a reputation of being one of the best officers ever in the Recorders office, by his able and courteous management of that important office. At his request the Masonic Fraternity of Winterset in conjunction with the Lodge of which he was a member, Champion Lodge No. 233, of Warren county, accompanied the body to the cemetery at Patterson and buried it with Masonic ceremonies, Rev. Henry Wallace preaching the funeral discourse, and acting as officiating clergyman at the request of the deceased.

Alexander McMichael was born in the county of Andrew, Ireland, on the 25th day of November 1849, and came with his parents to this country in 1863, and settled near Pittsburg, Pa. In the year 1866 he moved with his parents to Iowa and has resided in this State ever since except a short time that he spent in California. On the completion of the Railroad from Winterset to Des Moines, he was appointed station agent at Bevington, and by his integrity and splendid business qualifications won the esteem and regard of his employers. Last Fall, having been elected County Recorder, running considerable ahead of his ticket, he resigned that position and removed to Winterset, entering upon the duties of his office January 1st.

Death has been very busy in our midst during the past few months, and his last victim a young man just entering upon the prime of manhood, with the future so promising before him, is one of the saddest visitation that our community has received. Mr. McMichael leaves a wife to mourn his loss, and we know that she has the sympathy of the many friends of herself and husband in her sad hour of affliction.

LINES ON THE DEATH OF ALEXANDER McMICHAEL.

By Mrs. S. A. McMichael.

Another sweet companions gone,
From earth to dwell no more below;
His spirit free, he’s joined the throng
Of angels, in his heavenly home.

Though short his day of sorrow here,
He meekly bore the chastening rod
As one who had no doubts or fears,
But placed his confidence in God.

Then why should those he left behind
Grieve for the one they loved so true;
Since he’s been called from earth away
And left this world of sin and woe.

Then murmur not, nor grieve, dear friend,
To think that you are left alone;
For God will your protector be,
And guide you on your journey home.
