Death of Gene McCall

Never has the community been more startled than by the news of Gene McCall's fatal sickness and sudden death, all within less than a week's time. Although he was stricken with that terrible malady infantile paralysis, some days previous, it was but one week today since his father was first notified of his sickness. The father started at once for Minneapolis and the mother followed soon after.

He died last Sunday night. The remains were brought here yesterday; the funeral occurred from the McCall home this afternoon.

Most of our readers are familiar with the life and character of the deceased. He was born in Winterset November 1st 1890 (son of Elmer and Blanche (Sprague) McCall). When he came of school age he started in the public school and graduated with high honors in 1908. The following year he entered Harvard University from which he graduated, his standing being among the best in the class. He then entered the law school at Ann Arbour from which school he graduated last summer. At his graduation from the law school he was awarded the highest honors conferred by that Institution. He immediately secured a position in a law firm of Minneapolis. He visited Winterset during the time of the Old Settlers picnic, and every one who saw him at that time remarked about his healthy, robust appearance.

His parents have the sincere sympathy of the entire community at this hour of severe affliction.

GENE McCALL DIES IN MINNEAPOLIS

Popular Young Man Succumbs to Infantile Paralysis. Funeral Held This Afternoon

The funeral of Eugene R. McCall, who died in Minneapolis early Monday morning of infantile paralysis, will be held here Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Corkey will preach the funeral sermon. The body arrived Tuesday morning, accompanied by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. McCall, who went to Minneapolis a week ago when he was stricken with the disease.

Infantile paralysis has been almost epidemic in Minneapolis. The first reports after his parents arrived were encouraging but Sunday friends received telephone messages that he would hardly survive.

Gene was the only son of E. E. McCall, president of the Madison County State Bank, and was born in Winterset in 1891. He graduated from Winterset high school in 1906, from Harvard University Liberal Arts, in 1912, and from Michigan law with highest honors. In July he went into the law firm of Ware & Junell, of Minneapolis.

He was a young man of exceptional ability and was extremely popular in his home town. The pall bearers at his funeral will be classmates who will come from all parts of the state to pay their last tribute.

He was a great lover of the out doors. At school and college he was prominent in athletics. He was always up in the golf contests of the Country Club. He liked to fish and hunt. At Harvard he was known as a good student, a good ball player and wrestler. He won honors as an athlete and for scholarship in the Michigan law school.

He is survived by his father and mother and his sister, Helen.
