Death of Olive Fern Smith

On November 18, 1913 occurred the death by an accident, which no human foresight or the greatest parental care, could have prevented, of "Little Olive" daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Smith, living near Kasson. She with her little baby brother were playing in the barn, when in some way the corn sheller was overturned, causing her instant death. Olive was born August 18, 1909 and was just 4 years and 8 months old at the time of her death, leaving in the family two little brothers, Floyd and Dale.

This death came as a terrible shock not alone to the family, but to the entire community, which was attested by the large attendance at the funeral and the many kindly ministries by loving hearts and hands.

The funeral services were conducted in the Kasson M. E. Church, Saturday, November 15th by Rev. Ross, pastor of the Lorimor M.E. church, who preached from the text I Cor. 18:12, "For now we see through the glass darkly, now we know in part". The choir tenderly sang"Safe in the Arms of Jesus", "Above the Bright Blue", "Precious Jewels", and "Asleep in Jesus".

There were many and beautiful floral tributes and in the faith of the Christian; parents and friends followed to her last resting place, the sweet form of this dear child, where she was laid to rest in the Kilgore Cemetery.
