John W. Smith

John W. Smith, son of Elijah and Emma Smith, was born in Montgomery county, Ohio on October 31, 1845 and passed away at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines on September 14, 1931 at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 13 days.

In 1862 he moved with his parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near Knoxville from which place he enlisted at the age of 17 in the northern army during the Civil War where he served until its termination.

After his return from the war he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Courtney of near Knoxville, Iowa in 1870. To this union were born four sons, O. H. of Lorimor, G. E. of Winterset, W. T. of Panora and I. E. of Detroit, Michigan.

After leaving Knoxville, he moved to Madison county where he farmed until 1917 at which time due to the ill health of his wife he moved to Lorimor where he had resided until death. About a year after their retirement from farming his wife Margaret was called to the great beyond.

Besides the four sons he leaves to mourn one brother, Andrew and one sister, Martha Chenoweth, both of Lorimor and ten grandchildren.

Services were held at the Lorimor Church of Christ by Rev. H. L. Olmstead of Winterset Church of Christ.
