Wednesday, January 14, 1970MRS. ROY HAMMOND DIES AT 77 YEARS
Mrs. Roy Hammond of Winterset died Monday, Jan. 5, at Memorial hospital here. She was 77 years of age.
Mrs. Hammond was the former Geraldine Gillespie, daughter of Robert A. and Elvira Guye Gillespie. She was born Sept. 17, 1892, in Jackson township. She attended school at Winterset, and received her higher education at Iowa State Teachers college in Cedar Falls, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colo., and Iowa State college in Ames, where she graduated in 1915.
She taught rural school in Union and Jackson townships, and in Dexter and Winterset, from 1921 to 1932.
She was married in Omaha, in 1832, to Roy E. Hammond. They lived in Dexter until 1947, when they moved to a farm south of Dexter. In 1960 they moved to Winterset. Mr. Hammond's death occurred in 1969.
She was the last surviving member of her family, and the nearest surviving relative is a nephew.
She was a member of the Presbyterian churches in Dexter and Winterset. She was a past member of the Twentieth Century club, Iris Garden club and O.M.O. club of Dexter, and the Pythian Sisters and the Art center at Winterset.
Funeral services were held Thursday from the Collins Funeral home here, conducted by the Rev. E. E. Jandebeur, pastor of the First Christian church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
