Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset for Mrs. David Spence of Oelwein, whose death had occurred Sunday, Jan. 4, at a hospital in Waterloo. The Rev. E. K. Burham, pastor of the First United Methodist church of Winterset, conducted the service here. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Services had been held the preceding Tuesday from the Brant Funeral chapel in Oelwein.
Mrs. Spence was the former Mabel L. Black, daughter of Oscar and Nora Hoots Black. She was born at Arcola, Ill., on Jan. 30, 1901, and was 68 years of age at her death.
She was married at Winterset on March 2, 1921, to David Spence. They lived at Earlham, and later farmed near Winterset until 1935, when they moved to a farm near Hawkeye. For the last 25 years they had lived at Oelwein.
Mrs. Spence was a member of the United Methodist church, of the American Legion auxilliary, and the auxilliary of the Veterans of World War I.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Klein of Gilbertsville and Mrs. William Russell of Honolulu, Hawaii, a son, Robert Spence of San Antonio, Tex.; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Kirk Cochran and Mrs. Donald Crawford of Lorimor and Mrs. Harold Mayer of Winterset; and four brothers, Charles Black of Greenfield, Glen and Maurice Black of Winterset, and Paul Black of Silver City.
