Obituary

Thomas W. Tilton was born in Noble county, Ohio, August 21, 1843. Died in Madison county, Iowa, March 17, 1899, aged 55 years, 6 months, 26 days.

He enlisted in the service of his country, May 2d, 1864, in Company C, 161st regiment, of Ohio National Guards, for one hundred days. Received his discharge September 10, 1864, and returned home broke in health. He entered school at Athens, Ohio, but was compelled to give up his college education on account of poor health.

In the spring of 1868 he came to Warren county, Iowa, where he taught several terms of school. He was married to Phoebe Ellen McClain March 1, 1871. To this union were born ten children, five boys and five girls, all of which survive him, and were at the bedside of his last illness. He did not realize the end was so near, till twenty minutes of seven, the morning before he died. He said, “I am going to die,” and gradually grew worse, till his spirit took its flight to his God who gave it.

He was a believer in the word of God, and practiced the same in his life. He was a good neighbor and citizen, a kind, loving husband and father. He leaves besides his family, a brother and two sisters, and other relatives, also a vast number of friends to mourn.

Services were held at the home Sunday, at eleven o’clock, by Rev. Gardner, in the presence of a large audience, and laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery.
