JOHN L. AMY - Obituary

John Lambert Amy was born in Ohio in 1821 and died Oct. 31, 1913.

He came to Madison county in 1855 and lived a long time in Douglas township. He married Miss Bard and raised a family of five children, four of whom are now living as follows: M. J. Ford, in Des Moines, George lives in this county; Erse, In Missouri, and Mrs. Geo. Finley lives in California.

The funeral was held on last Saturday and burial at Stringtown cemetery. Rev. L. F. Davis conducted the funeral.

Another Pioneer Passes Away.

John Lambert Amy, one of the pioneers of Madison county, died Friday, October 31, after a lingering illness at the age of 92 years.

John L. Amy was born in Trumball county, Ohio, July 11, 1821. He was married in Ohio in 1844, to which union were born five children, of which four are living: Eugene, of Missouri; Geo. L., Winterset; Alice E. Finley, Oakland, Cal.; Mary J. Ford, Des Moines. Seventeen grandchildren survive him.

John Amy Dies

John Lambert Amy. “Old Amy”, died at the county hospital, Friday, October 31st where he had been for the last ten or fifteen years. He was over ninety-two years old.

Amy came to Winterset in 1855 and has been a resident of the city ever since. He wasa noted stage driver in his day and drove stage for years on the line between Des Moines and Council Bluffs through Winterset. He drove the bus between the depot and the St. Nicholas for Colonel Lothrop.

He was a kindly old man and was know to everyone in the city as only “Old Amy”.

He came to Madison county in 1855 which has since been his home. For many years he lived in Winterset where he was known by everyone. On account of his great age, he has for many years been incapacitated and died as a result of his advanced age.

The funeral services were held Saturday, conducted by Rev. L. F. Davis and the remains were interred in the Stringtown cemetery.
