John E. Bishop, 79, of Griswold, formerly of Winterset, died January 19, 2001 at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic. A mass of Christian burial was held January 23 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with celebrant Father Chris Hartshorn. Military graveside rites were conducted by the American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142 both of Winterset. Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset.
He was born November 29, 1921 in Milo to John A. and Mary (Heller) Bishop. He married Barbara Snow in June of 1946, she died in 1977. He then married Marjorie Hollen on June 20, 1978 in Indianola. He grew up in Warren County and graduated from Milo High School in 1941 and later from Iowa State University with a bachelor's and master's degrees in vocational agriculture. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and a long time resident of Winterset, moving to Griswold one and one-half years ago. He taught vocational ag. at the Winterset High School for 29 years retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, American Legion Post 8142, FFA and was active with Route 76 Downtown Square and County Restoration.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, one brother and one step-son.
Surviving relatives include his wife; one son, Kevin Bishop and wife Amy of Osceola; one step-daughter, Lauri Drake and husband Jim of Carson, Iowa; one sister, Kitty Davis of San Diego, California; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
