REV. J. D. STEVENS DIED WEDNESDAY

Retired Methodist Minister Dies at Age of 78 Years

The Rev. J. D. Stevens, a retired minister of the Methodist church, who had made his home in Winterset, the past several years, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the age of 78 years.

The Rev. Mr. Stevens had served about 41 years in the active ministry, holding pastorates in South Dakota and Iowa. His final assignment before his retirement was at the Peru Methodist church where he served for several years.

He was born near Pleasantville Oct 16, 1875, a son of Hamilton J. and Sarah S. Stevens. Except for four years in Nebraska, his early life was spent in Iowa.

In 1898 he was married to Amy Wittenburg of Sumner. They lived in Colfax for four years, then moved to South Dakota where they farmed for three years. It was in South Dakota that he answered the call to the ministry, accepting an appointment at Seneca in 1908. He served in that state until 1923, when he took a leave of absence for one year and returned to Iowa.

In 1924, he transferred to the Iowa conference and accepted appointment at Kellogg. He held various pastorates in the the Iowa conference until his retirement in 1948.

His only child, a daughter, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife; a grandson and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Parrott, assisted by the Rev. B. F. Hamilton. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
