S. C. WELCH DIED AT EARLHAM THURSDAY

Had Served as Director of Funeral Service There for 37 Years

S. C. Welch, funeral director at Earlham for many years, died at his home there Thursday, Jan. 21, of a heart ailment. He was 77 years of age. He had been a resident of Earlham since 1917.

Solon Chase Welch was born at Dexter on Dec. 25, 1876. On June 20, 1900, he was married to Maude Burns of Redfield. They were parents of one daughter. The wife and mother died in 1943.

In May 1945 he was married to Mina Johnson of Earlham who survives him.

As a young man he studied at the Hoenshuah-Carpenter college of Embalming in St. Louis, Mo. He first served at the Harbach Funeral home in Des Moines and later worked at Buxton and Dexter before coming to Earlham 37 years ago.

He was a member of the Friends church and was active in the Lions club. He was affiliated with the Earlham Masonic lodge, Shrine and Consistory of Des Moines.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Allen of Earlham; a foster-daughter, Mrs. Ila Silverthorn of Earlham and P. W. Welch of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a sister, Mrs. Eudora Marston of Des Moines.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Friends church at Earlham, conducted by the Rev. L. Willard Reynolds assisted by the Rev. Paul Hadley. Burial wa made at Wiscotta cemetery at Redfield.

S. C. Welch Funeral Held Monday

Earlham and community was saddened last week with the passing of S. C. Welch who for thirty-seven years was a familiar figure in Earlham business life. He practiced his profession in a quiet, dignified manner and through his many years of service here, brought comfort to scores of saddened homes in his kindly sympathetic way.

Funeral services were conducted from the Friends church Monday at 2:00 p.m. January 25. L. Willard Reynolds, pastor, was in charge assisted by Paul Hadley from Indianola. Rev. Reynolds’ sermon was based on the theme of “Building A Good Life.” Paul Hadley also paid Mr. Welch a very fine tribute in a short address.

Burial was in the Wiscotta cemetery at Redfield.

S. C. Welch Funeral Director at Earlham, quietly passed away at his home in Earlham Thursday, January 21, 1954 following an extended illness. He was born December 25, 1876 at Dexter. In this place he lived his early life and received his education. He was a graduate of the Hoenshuh-Carpenter College of Embalming of St. Louis, Missouri. He first associated his profession with the Harbach Funeral Home in Des Moines, also at Buxton and Dexter. In 1917 he established his Funeral Home in Earlham and has served this community for the past 37 years.

On June 20, 1900 he was united in marriage to Miss Maude Burns of Redfield. To this union one daughter was born. His wife passed to her reward December 27, 1943. On May 16, 1945 he was united in marriage to Miss Mina Johnson of the Bear Creek community.

Mr. Welch was a member of the Friends church which he served faithfully and loyal. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Earlham and of the Shrine and Consistory of Des Moines. He also held membership in the Odd Fellow Lodge. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and for many years served as a member of the Board of Education of the Earlham schools.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mina Welch, his daughter, Mrs. Pauline Allen and his son-in-law, Von Allen and one foster daughter, Mrs. Ila Silverthorn and husband, Glenn; three grandchildren, Robbie Allen, Jo Ann and Beverly Silverthorn; two brothers, Martin of Earlham and P. W. Welch of Los Angeles, California, and one sister, Mrs. Eudora Marston of Des Moines; other relatives and a legion of friends.

No more will we see “Pet Welch” on our streets. That genial smile that made every one his friend and companion will be gone, but while we will see his person no more, yet, his radiance and influence, will live on and on in the hearts of those who knew him. Physically he was small, but his heart was as big as the out doors which he loved. We who know him honor and respect the name of S. C. Welch.
