May 30, 1878 – page 7Died, May 27th, 1878, Lewis Aikin, aged 71 years. In mingling our tears with our grief, we realize that we have lost one whom we loved to imitate in life and commemorate in death, a kind and loving father and a generous, upright, honorable man, one who devoted his interest to his family and the community in which he lived; ever ready to forget and forgive, his life was an example worthy of the highest praise. During the first few days of his sickness he suffered the most acute pains but his last moments were quiet and peaceful. He passed away without a struggle, surrounded by his family and numerous friends.
The funeral services were held at Macksburg May 28th, where the Rev. Thos. Miller, of Winterset performed the last sad duties of reviewing the beautiful life of this devoted one, and paying a last great tribute to his illustrious memory. The funeral procession was the largest ever witnessed in this part of the country, being drawn by over seventy teams. Mr. Aikin was born in Hanklin, Kentucky, Nov. 29, 1807. He emigrated to Indiana with his father in early boyhood and lived near Columbus in that State until 1852, when he came to Macon county (word unreadable). In 1853 he went to Bloomfield, this State. In 1865 he came to Winterset and has since been a resident of this county.
