June 1954OLIVE MAY HESTER
Olive May, the oldest child of James and Mary Hockett was born in Earlham on March 12, 1879, and passed away at the Madison County Memorial hospital, Winterset, Iowa, on June 10, 1954 at the age of 75 years, two months and 29 days.
She was left without a Mother's love and care at the age of 13 and immediately felt the responsibility of her sister, two brothers and father, making a home for them until her marriage.
She graduated from the Earlham Academy with the class of 1900-and later attended Penn College.
On August 3, 1904, she was united in marriage to Jesse E. Hester, and her responsibilities of motherhood began immediately with the care of her three step-children. To this union were born five children.
For 38 years she and her husband resided on their farm west of Earlham where she was always a kind and considerate neighbor. Following his death in 1941, she bought a home in Earlham where she resided for the past several years.
Becoming unable to care for her home she sold it and was making plans to move into a little home near her son, Howard, and family in Pleasantville, Iowa where she described it as being a cozy and pleasant place to live, but God called her to His home where Love and Peace abide forever.
Olive was a member of the Earlham Friends church and as long as health permitted she was faithful in her attendance at all church activities. She was also a member of the Round Robin girls-a group who were school mates together in the Academy.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, a brother, Edgar, her husband and a step-son, Thomas.
Surviving her are her five children, Russell and Herschel of Earlham, Wilma (Mrs. Lloyd) Brown of Simi, California, Chalmers of Inglewood, California and Howard of Pleasantville, Iowa. A step-son, Ralph of Santa Rosa, California and step-daughter, Ethel Dobson of Los Angeles, California, 15 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, a sister, Bessie Morgan of San Jose, California, a brother, Charles Hockett of Mountain View, California, many cousins and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Earlham Friends church Sunday, June 13, at 2: p.m. with the pastor L. Willard Reynolds. Gertrude Conrad, Mildred Maxwell, Lloyd Cook and Fred Fry sang with Betty Maxwell at the piano. Casket bearers were: Graham Godby, Russell Ralston, Howard Bunnell, Gale Marston, Frank Inman and Frank Hill. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
