Henry DeWitt Aikins

Henry DeWitt Aikins, youngest son of John and Eleanor Gilmore Aikins, was born near Philadelphia, Pa., May 16, 1843, and departed this life, at Winterset, Iowa, Dec. 20, 1913, age 70 years, 7 months and 13 days. The family moved to Delaware, O. in 1845 and to Marion county, Iowa, near Pella, in 1855. He and his older brother, Robert, driving an ox team from Ohio to Iowa. There remain of this family of twelve brothers and sisters, one brother, Samuel Aikins of Kansas City, Mo., aged 87 years.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was clerking in a store at Pella, but enlisted, serving in Company G 32nd Iowa Vol. infantry, the last two years of the war. He united with the First Baptist church at Pella, when he was 15 years old and was made a deacon at the age of 25. He has held that office and that of trustee in the Pella and Winterset Baptist church almost continuously until he asked to be retired from active church duties about two years ago.

In 1865, he married Anna E. Weber of Delphi, Ind.,. To this union were born four children, Charles H. and Eleanor Ketman of Winterset; Ida Lemen of Council Bluffs and Margaret Wilson of Chicago. With his family he moved to Winterset in 1896. He has been in the retail shoe business since 1860 except four years following the war. He was for years a trustee of Central College at Pella.

In the death of H. D. Aikins, which occurred Monday night, Winterset loses one of her leading businessmen and best citizens. Mr. Aikins had been in poor health for a couple of years, giving up active business about one year ago.

Henry DeWitt Aikins, youngest son of John and Eleanor Gilmore Aikins, was born near Philadelphia, Pa., May 16, 1843 and departed this life at Winterset, Iowa, December 29, 1913, aged 70 years, 7 months and 13 days.

The family moved to Delaware, O., in 1845 and to Marion county, Iowa, near Pella, in 1855, he and his older brother, Robert, driving an ox team through from Ohio to Iowa. There remains of this family of twelve brothers and sisters, one brother, Samuel Aikins, of Kansas City, Mo., aged 87 years.

He was for years a trustee of the Central college at Pella.

In 1868 he married Anna E. Webber of Delphi, Ind. To this union were born four children: Charles W. and Eleanor Ketman of Winterset; Ida W. Lemen of Council Bluffs and Margarette Wilson of Chicago, Ill.

With his family he moved to Winterset in Sept. 1896. He has been in the retail shoe business since 1860 except for four years following the war.

The funeral was held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the deceased’s pastor, Rev. W. R. Moon, of the Baptist church.
