EMILY BELLE CLY

Emily Belle Cly was born May 25, 1875, a daughter of Egbert and Katherine Lenocker Firkins of Penn township in Madison county, Iowa. Her girlhood days were lived in the town of Dexter and on a farm in this vicinity. Her schooling was received at Laurel Hill and Dexter schools.

On October 13, 1889, at the age of 14 she was united with First Presbyterian church of Dexter and throughout her life was an active, interested member. At the time of her death, she held the longest membership in the church-nearly 65 years.

In 1909 on October 19, she was united in marriage to George H. Cly of Bayard, Iowa, and after living a short time in Blairstown, the couple made their home on the Cly farm near Dexter. To this union were born four children: Mary E., George Woodrow, Kathryn Louise and Helen May.

She had been a member of the Eva Ann Rebekah lodge since 1894 and also a member of the Past Noble Grand club and Navy Mothers' club. She was continuously engaged in her hobby of needlework.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1932 and also a daughter, Mary E. Nida in 1937. A grandson whom she had taken into her home passed away in 1943.

Emily passed away February 6, 1954 at the Dexter Clinic Hospital after several years of failing health.

Surviving her are two sisters, Elizabeth May McCleary of Davenport, and Sophia M. Watts of Dexter; three children; George Woodrow of Dexter, Katherine Louise Clayton of Earlham, and Helen Bowen of Glendale, California; four grandchildren, and one great grandson; also two nephews, eight nieces and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Dexter community was saddened and shocked by the sudden death of Mrs. Emma Cly Saturday night. Mrs. Cly has been in rather poor health for several years but this past week she had been at church and several other places and was taken ill on Friday and was taken to the hospital where she passed away.

Services were held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Dexter with Rev. Charles Eble, her pastor, in charge. Music was furnished by vocalists Mrs. Mervin Wells and Mrs. Charles Eble with Mrs. John Shepherd as organist.

Casket bearers were Gerald Wells, Alex Hanner, Morris Boyle, Ned Drake, James Hill and Chester Thrailkill. Interment was in the Penn Center cemetery at Earlham.

Some of the people from a distance were Mrs. Sophia Watts who was in Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Helen Bowen of Glendale, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Leo McCleary, Lizzie McCleary and Mrs. Mary Yaeger, all of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Boe and daughter Margaret of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nida, Eddie and Laverne of Newton.
